We are increasingly becoming an urban species and have been creating urban environments, with "work and commerce" as the central organizing factor of all urban planning which has led to car-dependent urban living. In today's big cities, we try to live by commuting long distances for work, shopping or for other essential activities, such as health, education, culture and leisure.

The cities have extended our world, opened new horizons and increased productivity. But at the same time, cities have broken our sense of community and created a sense of anonymity. We know that quality of urban life is inversely proportional to the amount of time invested in transportation and it has become increasingly evident that urban environments are linked to worse mental health problems, pollution, and huge waste of energy and resources.
